In this sensitive drama based on Bobby Gentry's haunting 1967 hit song, 18-year-old Billy Joe McAllister is in love with 15-year-old Bobbie Lee, but her father refuses to allow her to receive gentlemen callers before she's 16. While the other local boys slake their overwhelming adolescent sexual urges with prostitutes, a drunken Billy Joe succumbs to another sort of temptation. Later, guilt over his homosexual encounter causes Billy Joe to jump off the Tallahatchee Bridge.
