An overachieving, under-appreciated high school kid earns acceptance and the girl of his dreams when he dons a maroon tuxedo and heads to the prom in the romantic, coming-of-age story of Angus. Gravitationally challenged teen Angus Bethune (Charlie Talbot) is a standout defensive lineman on the football team, but he can't compete with blonde, good-looking quarterback Rick Sanford (James Van Der Beek--"Dawson's Creek"). But when Angus' free-spirited mom (Academy Award winner Kathy Bates) encourages him to go to the prom, everything in life changes in this sweet and piercing romantic comedy.

Angus has a gentle message of tolerance and understanding. Our heart goes out to him, even if it is manipulated in the most obvious ways.

Funny, touching and hugely reassuring.

For all its good intentions, Angus soon becomes tiring, with dingy photography, pedestrian pacing and a central character too lumpish and withdrawn to connect with an audience.

Though likable, it is a bit dull.

A genially engaging surprise.
