Why is he disguised as a clown? Why is he targeting children? And what's up with his obsession with making people float? All these questions, whose answers are familiar to those of us who have read the novel, are ever so slightly approached in the movie.

The film is just as much an evocation of troubled adolescence as it is a horror romp featuring a malevolent clown.

It wants to be both a nostalgia-driven romp and a genuine horror film, and it ends up doing a disservice to both sides.
